FAQs – Frequently asked questions
-
Judo is an educational method developed by Master Jigoro Kano (1860-1938), who later became director of primary education for the Ministry of Education in Japan, and a member of the Olympic committee.
What makes judo unique is precisely that it is an educational method that has become a sport, and not the other way around.
Kano took everything that was positive from budo and made it into the values of judo. He extracted everything that could be dangerous (mainly blows, dangerous dislocations, etc.) -
As an aside, it is not a kimono, but a judogi.
This being said, wearing a judogi is not obligatory during the first month of trial without commitment. However, some young people attach importance to wearing this garment, and the “judo” experience is more enriching when the grip (kumikata) is easier.
Judogi
1) allows a clearer grip (we are less pinched)
2) better cushions falls
3) is the traditional clothing of every judoka
You can approach our team: sometimes second-hand judogis are available at “cut prices”. -
Passing the first Dan (black belt) is a federal exam.
Before that, each club is free to pass the previous belts (from yellow to brown) according to the strategy defined by its technical manager.
With us, it is only our Sensei who, when he judges that the member has reached a sufficient level, decides to have him pass his exam.
Some clubs "give" the belts... one per year... one for a particular event.
This does not happen with us since the kyu pass is an exam that requires a certain importance and which values the work done on the tatami. Each of our judokas obtains his "belt" and is proud of it.
The tempo is set by our technical director so that each grade is integrated, and that the youngsters climb each step at an adequate pace. -
Judo is as much a sport for men as it is for women.
Judo Team Sion can also pride itself on having the highest rate of female participation in the Canton.
