Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel, Steinenvorstadt 1, 4051 Basel
Nothing but small blocks, and yet they can be used to create fantastic worlds. Building blocks are among the oldest toys and reflect an age-old human practice: blocks are stacked all over the world, worlds are recreated or invented. This universal game connects cultures and generations by allowing creative worlds to emerge without words or instructions.
In the 19th century, children began to build according to models for the first time. The motifs of the building sets reflect the educational concepts, values and circumstances of their time. The materials also changed. In the 1940s, plastic bricks revolutionized building: Thanks to their ductility and new plug-in systems, they have since made complex constructions possible.
Building blocks playfully promote imagination and fine motor skills, spatial thinking and problem solving, but also patience. In the exhibition, play stations invite you to build ... and to make the world tangible through play.
