Published in 1578, his "Requiem" is a mature work in which Porta displays counterpoint with dazzling technical mastery.
HORTUS CONCLUSUSLaurent Dietrich, Contra-tenorVincent Oberson, TenorMartin Steinmann, TenorPhilippe Vorlet, BarytonYvan Pochon, BassThe polyphony reveals a meticulous weaving of melodic lines from which a sense of fullness and intense meditation emerge. Sung in alternation, the Gregorian chant brings an eternal and infinite spirit to the composition. From the elegiac character of this Mass for the Dead then emanates, in a stunning chiaroscuro, a gentle and comforting light.Highly esteemed by his contemporaries, Costanzo Porta (c. 1528-1601) left a profound body of work that remains almost entirely in the shadows today. With this program, the Ensemble Hortus Conclusus pays tribute to this composer who elevated the Franco-Flemish tradition to its highest level, adding an Italian touch to it.
