Discover the development of the Chlausenhuuben from around 1900 to the 1960s
The beautiful Silvesterchläuse, who are known far beyond the borders of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, have undergone a fascinating evolution of their hoods and hats over the years. Documented illustrations from around 1900 show that the headgear at that time mostly consisted of flat hats or straw hats or resembled a traditional costume hood. These were covered with fabric and decorated with paper flowers and Christmas tree decorations.

In the first half of the 20th century, the shell of the hoods and hats was made of sturdy wire, which gave them a certain flexibility and malleability. Plywood was added in the 1960s and led to a different aesthetic. The new designs became more linear, more geometric, more uniform and changed the variety of traditional headwear.

The various hoods and hats from around 1900 to the 1960s offer an exciting cross-section of this development. They not only reflect the craftsmanship, but also changes in lived customs.
