With his impressive landscape paintings, the Canadian painter and draughtsman Matthew Wong (1984 Toronto - 2019 Edmonton), who died young, became a phenomenon shortly before his death. He came to art as a self-taught artist and gained attention and international reach in a surprisingly short time.

The focus of Wong's work is on landscapes of expressive, lyrical power. Created out of the imagination, they drew inspiration from both traditional Chinese painting and Western art.

Wong was particularly influenced by Vincent van Gogh (1853 Zundert - 1890 Auvers-sur-Oise). This applies not only to his influence on Wong's painting style and motifs, but also to certain elements of his life story. Both artists were self-taught, taught themselves to draw and paint and struggled with psychological challenges.

The exhibition is characterized by the stylistic and biographical parallels between Wong and van Gogh. The focus is on around 45 paintings and drawings by Wong - a first for Switzerland. They are complemented by a group of selected masterpieces by van Gogh.

An exhibition in cooperation with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
