Ana Mendieta, who was born in Havana in 1948 and died in New York in 1985, has had a profound impact on contemporary art over the last fifteen years. Exiled to the United States, she reoriented the avant-gardes of her time towards conscious and sensitive expressions, contrasting the monumentality of Land Art with ephemeral bodily interventions in nature. Her emblematic Siluetas series, begun in 1973, explores the fusion between the human body and the natural elements, evoking memories and primitive rituals charged with symbolism.
